As someone with some modest experience of army service, I’m always pleased to support events that mark service.
Today the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) made use of their special status in London as a privileged regiment, to mark 100 years since it was granted, and they paraded in the City.
The City of London is unique in the UK, in that HM armed forces cannot enter without permission from the City Marshall, but the Fusiliers enjoy the privileged right to march in the City with colours and bayonets. They also have a special status to recruit in the City.
Today they brought with them army cadets and veterans, meaning we enjoyed many generations being present today. Service is not as popular as it once was, but I hope today showed our soldiers, who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice and fight for our freedoms, that we appreciate them.
