Cornhill will be closed to traffic from Monday 30 January until mid-April.
Thames Water are installing a new water main and removing the old Victorian main. The works are complex involving not only a deep excavation of the carriageway but also a series of essential quality testing of the new water supply.
Collaborative working has been arranged taking advantage of the road closure, saving approximately 50 excavation days that would otherwise impact the network. These include:
· BT – demolish and rebuild a large underground chamber
· UKPN – installation of power supply cables for a new development (Leadenhall Street)
· Various utility contractors undertaking carriageway and equipment defect repairs
· JB Riney – installation of carriageway ducts
As a result of these various works, Cornhill will be closed to traffic in both directions between Bank and Gracechurch Street. Diversions will be in place for both east and west bound traffic, but will not conflict with the current closure of Cannon St as separate diversions will be used. This includes the implementation of a permitted right turn at the Cornhill / Bishopsgate junction, agreed with & implemented by TfL, that will allow traffic approaching from Aldgate to turn right towards London Wall.
