David Starkey presents a fascinating overview of recent history and the consequences of policies followed by political parties and government. In listening to him today two things struck me:
First he observed the importance of Parliament as our accountable body that binds the past, present and future. He also expressed how key it is to ensuring accountability to people, and we should carefully consider whether it is sensible to let ‘independent’ bodies make key decisions over our lives.
The second point is the importance of recognising our history and never forgetting the importance of protecting the freedoms of our people. He stressed the importance of educating everyone on the history of our nation, what it does well and where we have made mistakes. I wish we all had more time to listen and think about what works and does not work in our country, in the hope we might find better paths forward.
