Tonight was an opportunity to see living history and learn how over hundreds of years, people have come together to improve the health of others.
The St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group is the only charitable provider of expert eye care in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, treating patients regardless of ethnicity, religion or ability to pay.
Established by the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the origins go back to the 11th century, and since then, the Knights of St John, have offered medical care in many parts of Europe and the holy land.
Britain was one of the first countries to become industrial and in the 19th century there were many dangerous workplaces. Conditions and machinery were hazardous, sadly accidents were frequent but workers rarely saw a doctor in time. Death or disability from untreated injuries was common. In consequence the Members of the British Order decided to train people in first aid so accident victims could get help on the spot, and in 1877 they set up St John Ambulance to do this.
The work of this charity doesn’t get the credit and recognition it deserves. In the UK the St. John Ambulance volunteers are a comforting sight at many events, and in Jerusalem the hospital is a vital service. It’s therefore a pleasure to have supported their event tonight and to make a little effort to raise awareness of their good work.
