This morning I was delighted to welcome the Prime Minister, Theresa May, to our historic Smithfield market. It was an opportunity to discuss the future of our market, and the challenges of finding young people that want to work the unsocial hours. Traders were able to explain the trends in market and the changing interest in products. They also raised Brexit concerning the issues as they impact the importing of meat, and the Irish Border. It was also an opportunity to highlight the potential regeneration project of Smithfield to be the new home of the Museum of London. During the visit, the Prime Minister talked of the potential for good trade terms with Ireland as part of her plans to secure a positive Brexit deal. I was very pleased that she also commented on her support for the Smithfield regeneration project and the arts, as it is essential we have Government support if we are to achieve our ambitions for a cultural hub.
