Today I was delighted to join my colleagues touring Smithfield market, to see both the present operations and the potential for the future. The last market within the square mile, it is always a fascinating place to tour. Today we learnt how Brexit has impacted meat prices such that most UK produced lamb is being exported, and this has led to increased imports from New Zealand. We also considered the re roofing of the poultry market and aspirations from the Museum of London to re locate to the south of the market. This exciting development coupled with Cross Rail expanding Farringdon station means we look forward to much increased foot fall around the market in the next few years. The only disappointment is to hear that there are jobs to be had, including apprenticeships, at the market but a lack of applicants. Apprenticeships are something I aim to support in my time as markets chairman so we will be looking at what we can do to help.
