John Glen MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, spoke at an event for the City of London, held in partnership with the Centre for Policy Studies, and joined the City’s dinner event. Asked about Brexit and the UK’s future, concerning regulation for financial services, he was clear we need alignment with our European neighbours, because whilst it is important that the UK ‘maximised’ its advantages, we should not deviate from global standards that underpin our global system and stability. He also recognised opportunities post Brexit for partnerships in financial services environments such as Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and the USA, adding: “There are opportunities, government to government, regulator to regulator, to actually create a better and smoother environment for more economic activity.” Always charming it was a pleasure to talk to him about the importance of London financial and tertiary services.
